Field Trips
Far Horizons sponsors
archaeological and cultural trips to Mexico led by experts in the field. This is
a unique way to experience a side of Mexico and Central America that you may not
get through your travels alone. Here are some upcoming trips of interest to
Mexicophiles.
River of Ruins
– April 10 to 22, 1999 with Armando Anaya. This tour to the hidden temples of
the ancient Maya includes a river voyage on the Río de la Pasíon and onto the
Usumacinta River (which contains the largest volume of water flowing in Central
America) to visit sites in Tikal, Seibal, Dos Pilas, Arroya de Piedras, Aguateca,
Altár de Sacrificios, Yaxchilán, Bonampak and Palenque.
Trip cost, including round trip airfare from Houston, is $4250 per person
double occupancy (with a $325 single supplement).
Highlights of the Maya
Civilization – April 24 to May
3, 1999 with Dr. Patricia Cook. This
is a ten-day archaeological odyssey through the Maya sites of Copán, Dos Pilas
and Tikal national park. Copán, in Honduras, has been called the Athens of the
New World and recent archaeological work has aimed to restore parts of the site
to its former state. Trip cost, including round trip airfare from Miami, is
$3295 per person double occupancy (with a $395 single supplement).
The Art of Palenque
and Chichén Itzá – July 24 to
August 1, 1999, a fund-raising trip for the Palenque Cross Group project with
Dr. Merle Greene Robertson. Many believe that Palenque represents the height of
Maya artistic achievement. Trip participants will be hosted at Palenque as
guests of the archaeological staff of the Cross Project, which has been
conducting excavations for the past two years under the direction of Dr.
Robertson (an art historian who has studied the art of the Maya for 35 years and
who is the author of several volumes on this subject...participants will be
given a signed copy of one of her books). Trip cost, including round trip
airfare from Dallas, is $3595, with a $325 single supplement.
