Alamos Accommodations

Casa de los Tesoros: Av Obregon 10. Tel 011-52 642-80010 This ex-convent and treasury house (at different times), built in the 1780's, serves as a social center for the American community with a fine restaurant and cantina featuring various Saturday night musical events. The rooms line the courtyard and all have fireplaces for the chilly winter nights. Rates were quoted over the phone at $50 US, but when I arrived during the slow time of the season my room cost $35 US, single or double. There probably is no negotiation in the busy months. Nice pool, nice place to stay.

Los Portales: Av Juarez 6. Tel: 011-52-642-80211. This 1720's era Spanish colonial landmark has not been as well kept as some of the others, but still should be considered, especially if price is an issue. There is no restaurant but it is a fine place to sit out front and observe across to the Plaza de Armas and the cathedral. Was built and originally owned by the mine-owning Almada family. A double is currently $28 US.

Hotel La Mansion: Av Obregon 2. Tel: 011-52-642-80221. This hotel and the next two are owned by the same couple, she from California, he from Canada. All three properties are architectural masterpieces restored to irurnaculate levels. The rooms are individually decorated, many with fireplaces and some with small kitchens. Doubles at La Mansion range from $48 US to $75 US.

Casa Encantada: Calle Juarez 20. Tel: 011-52-642-80482. Another beautiful courtyard and swimming pool. Gorgeous rooms that command top dollar for this town. Doubles range from $75 US to $115 US.

Hotel La Posada: Calle 2 de Abril. Tel: 011-52-642-80045. This hotel is a bit separated from the town center, about one-half mile away. All eight rooms are terrific and there is a restaurant/bar. This is a very quiet, serene section of town. Doubles are in the $80 US range. Hotel Enrique: Calle Juarez 5. Tel: 011-52-642-80280. Next to the Los Portales, this is a budget option. The building is as old as all of the above, but it hasn't been restored to the same level. You can probably negotiate a price of around $10 US to $15 US so this hotel shouldn't be ignored if you want to spend less and are accustomed to more Spartan, Mexican digs.

Rentals and Real Estate: Contact Edith Pratt. Calle Comercial 4-B. Tel: 011-52-642-80790 or 80110.
